FUNCTIONAL CAPACITY ASSESSMENTS
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) provides a detailed understanding of a child or young person’s abilities, strengths, and support needs in everyday life. It looks at how they participate at home, school, and in the community, and identifies the types of supports that can help them build independence and confidence.

At Grow Paediatric Therapy, Functional Capacity Assessments are completed by a registered Developmental Educator experienced in child development and disability. Each assessment is tailored to the child, using standardised tools, observation, and collaboration with parents, teachers, and other professionals. The aim is to create a clear and practical picture of how the child functions day to day, beyond diagnosis or labels.

Functional Capacity Assessments are often requested to support National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) planning or review, to guide therapy and support goals, or to track progress over time. They can also assist during major transitions such as starting school, moving into high school, or changing therapy providers.

Areas explored in a Functional Capacity Assessment may include:
-
Communication and social interaction
-
Emotional regulation and behaviour
-
Self-care and daily living skills
-
Learning and problem-solving
-
Mobility and motor skills
-
Community access and participation

A Functional Capacity Assessment includes interviews with parents or caregivers, direct assessment sessions with the child, and input from key people in their life where appropriate. Findings are summarised in a detailed written report that outlines strengths, challenges, and recommendations for supports, accommodations, and next steps.

At Grow Paediatric Therapy, our focus is on ensuring each assessment is respectful, family-centred, and meaningful. We translate technical results into accessible information that helps families, educators, and support coordinators understand what the child needs to thrive.
